Most of the children who excel in music are children who are blessed with the full support of their parents. Let’s face it, music is not a cheap pastime and neither is it a lucrative career. So most of those individuals who have had proper musical training must have had parents who recognize the true value of music. It’s a good thing that there are still those who are keen on getting their children enrolled in music conservatories and mastering piano or cello. Unfortunately, not all parents are like that and some musically inclined children aren’t given the chance to develop their own potentials.

But then again, children need not be sent to exclusive schools for music in order to excel in the field. Music conservatories, in the first place can be very costly. Then, of course, there is the inevitable need to buy instruments and other school paraphernalia. Being part of a local or church choir is a great alternative if you want your child to musically develop. Yes, choir costumes will mean an additional expense for the parents. But it is a far lesser burden than Julliard. Children can actually learn a lot from being in choirs.
Some schools today are actually very active in providing regular music programs for students. These programs assemble choir groups that are handled by well trained music professionals. Most choir masters and choir handlers have had their share in show choir performances and competitions and have had accumulated more than enough knowledge in dance numbers and choral dresses.

Since school choir programs are basically free, parents should not hesitate to encourage their children to become part of it. See, aside from it gives additional training to their son/daughter; it also allows them to create a better school standing via their list extra curricular involvements. These particular activities are actually highly considered by universities and colleges upon enrollment and may even be the cause of scholarship grants for some.

Now what can parents do to encourage their children to get involve in music programs such as school choirs? Well, they can start by saying so. Nothing beats upfront, open exchange of ideas. If parents want greater involvement (and maybe the chance to shoe in their kids), they can help music teachers and choir masters organize fundraising campaigns. They can contribute items for sale in order to collect funds. Another way to show support is by finding potential donors and sponsors for choir apparels and accessories, or even competition registration fees and transportations.

But perhaps the best, simplest and most cost-effective way for parents to encourage their children to maintain membership in choirs is by buying, preparing or making them their own choir apparel. Most school choirs these days no longer use choir robes and prefer stylish coordinated choir apparels that are especially designed to help performers appear more visually appealing on stage. It doesn’t need a big investment actually as improvisation is welcome. What this activity really needs is input and some effort. Moreover, presence will also be helpful. If you are to bring your child to choir practice, make it a point to watch him perform as part of the group, at least every other week. This will make him feel that you are genuinely proud of what he/she is doing. A little push goes a long way. Who knows, your little drummer boy may become the next Broadway star.
