This may not work if you live in a big city. But if you’re having a big holiday wedding, why not do something a bit more casual with your friends for the rehearsal? Why not think about an indoor picnic and a bonfire? If you live in a city with “no burn” laws, you might be able to find a venue with a circular fireplace and hunker down! Winter weddings give you lots of options. Many people opt for more formal weddings with church ceremonies because the churches are beautifully decorated for the holidays and the jewel toned velvets and satins lend themselves to formal evening weddings. And besides, the dark is what this holiday is about, so evenings make sense.
So if you’re having a formal wedding, why not go more casual for your rehearsal dinner? Knowing that you’re going to spend the next day in heels and hose, a lot of brides might be happy to look fabulous in a ski sweater and a pair of Ugghs! Weddings are fairly formal just by their nature.Their formality can make it difficult for the wedding couple to get time with everyone. So, an indoor picnic for the rehearsal is a great option. Bowls of steaming soup or stew, fondue (cheese or chocolate? Hmmm, cheese and chocolate?), mulled wine, hot chocolate might all be great options for a buffet. Give people only little tables so that they have to drift around a bit for food and drink. That raises your chances of running into them naturally and easily. Hire a song leader or find one from your crowd, and carol and sing holiday favorites. Do it outside around the fire or inside around a piano. Take advantage of the beauty of a winter evening and contrast the cold of the winter with the warmth of your wedding. After all the wedding vows you’re making tomorrow are a promise that you will always have a warm place to go and a sweetheart to snuggle with during the long winter nights!
Here’s what you don’t want to do: any skiing, sledding, skating, tobogganing that might lead to broken arms and legs for brides and grooms and guests. Do sports the day after the wedding! Emergency rooms are no place to get ready for your wedding and your tux pants might not fit over the cast! Do, however, remind people to dress warmly. You might want to bring extra hats and mittens! Now you have a winter holiday bonfire tradition. Start planning next year’s when you get home from your honeymoon! Let everyone see how well you’re thriving in your marriage, one year later!
