Most superstitions go back along time. Back when they did arranged marriages the couple wasn’t even allowed to meet until the actual ceremony. This way the groom didn’t have the chance to back out if he did not find the bride attractive.
Now it is mainly continued so that the groom is truly wowed when he sees his bride walk down the aisle.
