The most popular of all cut flowers by far for it’s pure beauty, intoxicating fragrance and versatility is the Oriental Lily. Thanks to the many glasshouse growers throughout Australia, these flowers are available year-round.
Oriental Lilies come in a range of colours, however the most popular cut flower colours are Soft Pink, Hot Pink, Hot Pink/White, Soft Pink/White, Dark Pink, Pure White, White/Yellow & Yellow.
The open blooms of Oriental Lilies are quite large, and can span up to a diameter of 20 – 25 cm.
With their strong tall and straight stems, they are very popular for use in vases and arrangements, but the blooms are also frequently used in Wedding Bouquets. As a cut stem, they have an excellent vase life and can last up to 2 weeks or more if they are taken care of, with stems cut and water changed etc.
Many people dislike Oriental Lilies because of their strong fragrance, however there is no better way to fill your home with an amazing scent. If you suffer from Hayfever or any other pollen allergies, then Oriental Lilies are not advisable.
The second issue many people have is with the orange pollen which is located at the end of each of the 6 stamens within the bloom of the Lily. A good florist will always remove any pollen from opening Lily blooms, and will especially remove them from Wedding Flowers without question. When having Lilies in the home, as soon as a bloom opens, it’s best to remove the pollen while it is still hard and discard it. The longer any Lily pollen is exposed to the air, the quicker it will turn to powder and stain the petals of your bloom.
Oriental Lilies can be on the expensive side, however keep in mind when purchasing them that you are buying one of the most elite of all flowers. As a cut flower the value you receive from their vase life alone is easily justifiable.
When trying to decide whether to have Oriental Lilies in your wedding bouquet, keep in mind that they are a flower that makes a statement. They are large, showy and can be fiddly to work with, which is why your florist will most likely charge a premium rate for your Bridal Bouquet.
Always keep in mind that Oriental Lilies take up to 1 week or more for the first bloom to open (depending on your location and the time of year), so if you require them for a function or event, you will need to plan ahead so they will be looking their best on the day. When Oriental Lilies are delivered to a florist, they are almost always in bud, as this is when they are freshest.
Buying Oriental Lily stems entirely in bud is a great idea, as you will have the enjoyment of seeing them open up completely blemish free and will have the freedom to remove the stamens as you need to.
Oriental Lilies can be mixed with other flowers and look great, however usually they are a flower that makes a grand statement all on their own. In a vase, stems of the Oriental Lily would perhaps only need some twisted willow and tropical leaves for company.
Flowers that mix well with Oriental Lilies in wedding bouquets are Roses, Singapore Orchids, Cymbidium Orchids, & Anthuriums and they look great complimented by Dodda Vine, Ivy Berry and Magnolia Leaves.
