How can I jump start my carreer as a model, even if I have never done it before?
hey! so i’m 14/f and i would really like to model. How can I jump start that career to become a good enough model to submit my photos to agencies and things? ANY HELP is appreciated!
p.s ive never done or tried anything before. so if there are any models out there, how did you start?
My best advice, for now, is to:
1} Exercise and get yourself as healthy and strong as possible. Modeling can be hard work.
2} Practice your poise and looks. Get a mirror, and learn to give different emotional responses in a moments notice. Unless your modeling shoes, chances are you will be wearing a lot of high heels. Start wearing them now, so when you get a job, you will be comfortable walking on smooth concrete, slick cobblestone, wet grass, highly polished runways, etc… If you look comfortable walking, you’ll get more jobs in tv, video, etc…, not just print. You almost need to be able to do gymnastics while in 4 inch heels.
Take some acting classes, gymnastics, yoga, and even photography can help. The more you know in general, the better. So, stay in school. The more thngs that you can offer over the next model in line at an audition, the better. ITS ALL COMPETITION. Just like baseball, basketball, and who gets that last piece of bacon at breakfast.
3} Your to young to use most portfolio sites, but you can go to: www.onemodelplace.com and set up a free membership. You can use the forums there to communicate with established models and photogs, and get some good advice about your local area. Who to work with, who to NOT work with. You can get a portfolio started with a photog doing TFP, or trade for photos. Make sure you understand the agreements, and that you always have a parent with you. Work with several photogs to give you a variety of looks, and contacts. Networking is important. Schedule shoots as often as you can. You might not get paid a lot, or at all, but you will get experience, and meet the people that do hire, or can suggest models to others. Make people remember you in a positive way. Be on time to shoots, and make sure you and everyone you work with are on the same page regarding everything.
4} Thru the OMP website, you can find stylists, some of which will work TFP, or at least chaeper, for their own portfolios. Make sure your hair, makeup, clothing are in great shape. They will make or break your photoshoots.
5} Big thing. Assume everyone is out to take advantage of you, until they prove that they are not (and still, you have to keep an eye on them). Thats a basic business theme. Modeling is a business first, though it can have some great perks. Its nice to have fun in front of the lights, if your good, meet people, travel, wear nice clothing etc…., but your only there to make someone else a lot of $$$
Chances are, you wont be a Tyra, or any of the other supermodels, so you wont have millions of $$’s from modeling. You can make good $$’s eventually, but you will have to go thru lots of rejection from some real ignorant and stuck up people along the way. Open model calls may bring several hundred models out, for 2 actual jobs. Thats where being comfortable and in control at all times, in heels, health, stamina, poise, etc… comes in handy.
If you run across someone that says you have to be 6 ft, 100 pounds, with a double D chest, dont bother listening. They dont know much about the business. If you do runway, you need to be taller, and slim, but thats cuz clothing is cut that way for shows, and models are hired to fit the clothes. There are lots of other things models do, aside from runway. Fashion, hair and hands, editorial, and much more. All these mags, TV commercials, etc.. are full of models and actors, not real people.
