Do Blood Red Parrots sometimes have sparklely looking fins or is that ick?
Ive had a Blood Red Parrot for about 4 months now and all of a sudden i have noticed his fins are showing a crystal like sparkle to them, but i cant remember if hes always had that. Im guessing if its not normal, its ick?
Ich wouldn’t be sparkly, more like salt. Try turning off the lights in the room and in the tank, and shine a flashlight on the fins and the rest of the body– if it looks like the fish is covered with gold specks, it’s probably velvet, which is a parasite. Remove the carbon in the filter and begin treatment with either malachite green + formalin (Quick Cure, Rid Ich, Aquarisol, or your own mixture) or copper sulfate (Coppersafe, Organicure, etc.). This is caused by a photosynthetic parasite (Oodinium species), so turning off the light for the duration of the treatment will help to weaken it (also, malachite green degrades with exposure to light). Do NOT raise the temperature when treating the tanks, as this will drastically decrease the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. Treat at least a week after you see the last specks disappear, as this is a very resilient parasite that is known to return.
Beware, malachite green and formalin are both suspected carinogens, so don’t allow it within reach of small children, and be a bit careful with it.
If you don’t see the gold specks on most of the body and fins, it’s probably just some underlying pigment that is coming out as the fish matures.
