SCA questions from a female newbie-Society for Creative Anachronism?
I was thinking of using Vianne du Fraise as my name…opinions?
Also, how bad do you think the garb snark factor will be? It’s going to be my first event and I didn’t spring for the $$$ linen. I made the chemise and skirts myself and used some poly-cotten blends. It’s not overly obvious, but I would hate for people to pick on me…If you have any ideas for a comeback to “it’s not period” or whatever, I would love to hear them.
In terms of your name, I suggest that before firmly deciding on it that you meet with your local herald, especially if you hope to register it at some point. I think it is pretty though! I know some folks play for a bit before settling on a persona that they really flush out. For me, I don’t have a personal per se, I just have a name I use in the Current Middle Ages.
In terms of the costuming concerns, most folks in the SCA are not garb snarks who will say something to someone directly. I admit to being a garb snark but I would never go up to anyone, most especially someone who is a newbie, and berate them for their garb! As long as your attempt is truely reasonable, you should be fine at the event, particularly as you are just starting out.
If someone does snark at you for your fabric choice, remind them of the “creative” part of our game. But really, unless you are a garb geek (guilty) the majority of the people in our organization aren’t dressed perfectly period. Even my hand-sewn linen tunics, veil and hosen (even sewn w/ linen and silk thread), with my hand sewn leather shoes aren’t perfectly period.
I will offer you some garb advice though. I know that the price was right on your poly cotton blends but if/when you can I highly suggest going to linen. Not from a snark standpoint but from a comfort one. My very first event was a hot humid summer camping one and I went in borrowed poly cotton garb. Nearly ended up with a visit to the chiurgeon because I overheated so badly. Same event the next year, same sort of weather but I was in lovely lightweight wool and linen and was SO much more comfortable. The natural fibers are truely so much better for warm weather events. I’m fortunate here that I know someone who orders bolts of linen and passes it on to the populace at ~$5/yd. But even fabrics-store.com’s linen is only ~$7/yd. 3.5-4 yds is enough for a tunic (variations of which will get you though until about early/mid 15th century), and if you order a swatch you get a 5% coupon code with it.
