Set Tie

For many trout anglers (including myself) fishing for stocked trout is something that we have to do from time to time. Most state governments stock trout in lakes and rivers for the express purpose of being fished for by anglers. Fishing for these stocked or planted trout is a bit different than fishing for a trout that is “native” and grew up in the wild, rather than a tank or pond. In this article, I’m going to reveal some tips for fishing for stocked trout.

The first thing to keep in mind, is exactly what I just mentioned. Stocked fish grew up in a tank or pond and are used to being fed, rather than having to search for and find food themselves. This means that we as anglers need to take a different approach when fishing for these fish. Stocked trout readily bite baits such as cheese, marshmallows, and synthetic baits, whereas native trout tend not to eat such things.

A great technique for fishing for stocked trout is to use a gang hook rig. A gang hooks rig is simple to set up, and extremely effective. Begin by taking the end of your line and slipping on an egg sinker (1/4 to ½ ounce). Now tie on a small barrel swivel (size 10 or 12), this will act as a ’stopper’ and help prevent line twist. On the opposite end of the barrel swivel tie on a set of pre tied gang hooks (size 8 or 10). Now add a synthetic bait to each hook, enough to completely cover each hook. You will now have two balls of bait hanging from your gang hook rig.

This rig is now cast into a lake that has been stocked with trout. Allow it to sink, and slowly reel in the slack line. Set your rod against a forked stick or other stationary object. When using a gang hook rig in this manner you want your line to be completely taut. You’ll know when you get a bite because your rod tip will start to bounce. My normal rule of thumb is to wait for a half an hour of so, before checking my bait and re-casting.

Another trout fishing tip for fishing for stocked trout is to make sure you’re fishing when the fish are the most active. How do you know when the fish are the most active? Simply by paying attention to the weather and moon. In other words, if you pay attention to which phase the moon is in and what the weather is doing, you can dramatically impact your fishing success. This might sound strange, but its nonetheless true. Paying attention to these two forces of Mother Nature will dramatically impact your fishing success.

Fishing for and catching stocked trout isn’t a difficult thing to do, but using these simple tips will pay huge dividends in your success as an angler. How am I so sure that these tips will help? Because I personally use them, and know how effective they are.
