And now almost anyone can purchase an orchid and grow it successfully right in your own home. Due to the wide variety of orchids in the world and the numerous hybrids that have been developed over time, you can easily find just the right orchid to fit you growing conditions and color choice.

More people purchase the widely popular Phalaenopsis (Phal) also known as Moth orchid. It is enjoyed by many people especially new orchid growers because it is adaptable to so many different growing environments.
Orchid flowers enjoy different life spans. For example, the Phalaenopsis blooms last for two to three months while the blooms of the Cattleyas orchid only last 3-4 weeks. There are orchid types that bloom only one time each year and there are others that can bloom several times during the year.
Beyond there visual beauty, many people love orchid flowers because of their differing fragrances. The fragrances of orchid scents vary widely. There are some with fragrances so strong they almost knock you down with a good whiff and you can find other that have refined and subtle fragrances from flowery to fruity.
And some people will be delighted to find some orchids with fragrances such as raspberry, coconut, lilac, citrus, and some are even disgusting.
Because of the extensive numbers of orchid types and species, it is easy to find information and answers to any question that may arise while attempting to grow them. There are discussions and artwork about orchids in Chinese and Japanese history going back to almost 700 B.C. Many cultures believed orchids had healing qualities and were often used as a natural remedy or herb.
In the world today, orchids are one of the most sought after plants. They are readily available virtually anywhere in the world and are used in numerous ways by professional florists and enjoyed by home grown flower enthusiasts.
